PANPSYCHISM vs Pantheism
17th century vs 21st century God Models
Baruch Spinoza's God is not a traditional creator who made the world through fiat lux command, or a specific selection from infinite possibilities. Instead, Spinoza viewed God and the physical universe as one and the same thing—a concept known as pantheism (Deus sive Natura, "God or Nature"). Ancient cultures imagined, and personalized, similar divine aspects of timeless Nature : Gaia (mother nature), Demeter (agriculture), Helios (sun god).
Philosophical implications of Nature God :
1. No Free Will: God did not deliberate or choose to create the universe at a specific moment.
2. Logical Necessity: Everything in the universe flows from the inner necessity of God’s nature, much like mathematical properties flow from the definition of a triangle.
3. Immanent Cause: Rather than an external creator standing apart from her creation, eternal Nature is the uncreated, self-
4. Impersonal Substance: God has no human traits, consciousness, personal goals, or emotional responses like mercy or wrath.
5. No Plan or Purpose: Events happen through strict physical and logical laws, not because of a grand design or intentional blueprint. Google Search
Personal Notes :
1. I don’t know if Free Will (to choose one possible effect over another) could apply to a Timeless Spaceless Cosmic Cause. Like a computer programmer, an inherent Creative impulse (Conatus) could simply define a direction (causation), and a context (nature), then logic (natural law) would determine the path (evolution). The goal : to be determined.
2. Since our Universe seems to be governed by mathematical Logic (natural law), we may imagine the First Cause metaphorically as Plato’s Logos : the principle of Reason & mathematical Logic.
3. Spinoza probably assumed that Nature was an Eternal process. But now we have evidence of a space-
4. Since living and thinking entities (e.g.your dog) in the real world do have personal traits,we must assume that the universal Cause of our system had the Potential for such individual traits, but not the limitations of individuation.
5. Since Evolution has progressed from dimensionless Singularity, to Plasma, to Particles, to Stars, to Galaxies, to Solar Systems, to Planets, to YOU, we must assume that the Cause of such progression from simple to complex has resulted from some kind of Plan or Purpose. Again, Spinoza was not aware of Darwinian Evolution by selection for fitness, or the Anthropic Principle to explain the Fine Tuning of the Singularity setup, and subsequent limiting Laws of Nature.
