A philosophical worldview or belief system grounded on the 20th century discovery that Information, rather than Matter, is the fundamental substance of everything in the universe. It is intended to be the 21st century successor to the ancient worldviews of Materialism and Idealism. An Update from Bronze Age to Information Age. It's also a Theory – of – Everything that covers, not just matter & energy, but also Life & Mind & Love.

  ERGOD : First Cause

     Evolution : Cosmic Creation Process

I first came across the The Information Philosopher, [see post 151] about 15 years ago. I had recently started thinking philosophically about the role of Information in the world, after reading an article by a quantum physicist, who after describing the physical perplexities of sub-atomic matter, exclaimed : “it’s all information!” Claude Shannon had defined Information, for pragmatic purposes, in terms of thermo-dynamic Entropy¹. And positive Energy² was ironically labeled as “Negentropy”. Despite those scientific contradictions, for theoretical & philosophical purposes, I found the Information Philosopher to be a fount of wisdom. But his webpage has hundreds of entries on a wide variety of topics. Much of it over my untrained head. So, I began to independently construct my own amateur ontological thesis, Enformationism³.

Now, many years later, I’m circling back to TIP, and finding relevant information to supplement my incomplete under-standing of ultimate ontological questions, such as First Cause (aka God). I had long ago rejected the biblical accounts of Genesis, and subsequent scriptures, as political & religious propaganda of ancient rulers of unruly people. Although I discounted the notion of a humanoid deity interfering in history, I couldn’t deny the philosophical implications of a primordial creation event, commonly known as the “Big Bang”. So, I began to substitute various alternative terms in place of “God” : G*D, First Cause, LOGOS,  ALL, BEING, Creator, Enformer, MIND, Nature, Reason, Source, Programmer.

Now, I’m adding a new term to that list : ERGOD⁴, the First Cause and fundamental power of our world’s creation and evolution. Physically, the universe is dualistic, propelled by the interaction of constructive Enformy⁵ and destructive Entropy. This is reminiscent of ancient Zoroastrian myths of a cosmic battle between forces of Light & Dark, or Good vs Evil. Those Babylonian stories obviously influenced the Jewish Torah. Except that their religion was monistic, with a single deity, who created humanity in his own immaterial image (soul). So, the dualities of Reality — Good vs Evil, Life vs Death — had to be explained by introducing a lesser deity : the Adversary. Yet the essence of the eternal Causal force, ERGOD, must be inherently capable of division into the antagonistic spacetime forces that modern science calls Energy and Entropy. In its not-yet-real form, I call it simply Potential⁶.

Quote : “The physical product of the cosmic creation process is all the negative entropy in the universe. While thermo-dynamics calls it “negative,” information philosophy sees it as the ultimate positive, and deserving of a better name. So we call it the Ergo⁷, which etymologically suggests a fundamental kind of energy.” To suggest an essential First Cause, TIP spells it ERGOD. And I will add that  term to my list of labels for the Cause of the Big Bang. Which inexplicably began the on-going process of creation with maximum Energy and minimum Entropy. Fortunately for us late-bloomers in evolution, the negative effects of entropic randomness are offset by the positive influences of ergodic systems that allowed Life & Mind to bloom in a side path on the road to bypass Heat Death.  

   Entropy is a measure of molecular disorder, random-ness, or the unavailability of energy to do useful work within a closed system. It represents the tendency of systems to move toward a state of maximum disorder and equilibrium, often described as the "arrow of time" in thermodynamics.

2. Energy :
   Scientists define “energy” as the ability to do work, but don't know what energy is. They assume it's an eternal causative force that existed prior to the Big Bang, along with mathematical laws.

   We also co-opt the technical term “ergodic” from statistical mechanics as a replacement for anti-entropic, and because it contains the highly suggestive “Ergod."

5. Enformy :

In the Enformationism theory, Enformy is a hypothetical, holistic, meta-physical, natural trend or force, that counteracts Entropy & Randomness to produce complexity & progress.

6. Potential :
   Unrealized or unmanifest creative power.

7. Ergo :
  Latin term for “thus”, as in “thus saith the Lord”. But in this case it refers to the Cause of an effect.

Information Philosophy
answers the most fundamental question in ontology - what exists and how did it come into existence?

Ergodic was derived from Greek ergon (energy) and Greek hodos (path), to get a word meaning "the path followed by energy."
